The ISI mark is by far the most recognized product quality certification mark in the Indian subcontinent. The ISI mark is issued by Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). There are 341 mandatory products which need ISI certification before being sold in India.
The manufacturer(s) have to complete the testing and documentation required by BIS in order to certify the product with ISI mark. The supplementary requirements to be fulfilled by foreign manufacturers, whose factory(s) location is/are outside India, are specified below:
⇒ An AIR must be a resident of India
⇒ The nominated Authorized Indian Representative is considered as a representative of one manufacturing firm only and doesn’t represent other foreign manufacturer as AIR under the Bureau of Indian Standards conformity assessment schemes. Although, in case, where foreign manufacturers belonging to one group of companies and importers (related to the foreign manufacturer) nominate as Authorized Indian Representative, the condition of restriction will not be applied in such case.
⇒ Authorized Indian Representative (AIR) must not possess any conflict of interest regarding their role as AIR with examination of sample(s) in third party laboratories.
⇒ Authorized Indian Representative (AIR) should ideally be a graduate at least by qualification and must be able to understand the provisions of BIS Act, 2016, rules and regulations framed here under and the implications therewith.
⇒ Authorized Indian Representative (AIR) must declare his or her assent to be accountable for compliance of the BIS act, rules and regulations as laid down in BIS license, agreement, covenant etc. enacted by or on behalf of the foreign manufacturer with reference to grant and operation of license.
⇒ The name of Authorized Indian Representative (AIR) is inscribed in the license document.
